There
are three players that were in the original formation of the Band in 1987:
Colin Stuart, 2nd trumpet, Billy Magee, drums and Brian Dinsley 1st alto.
With many more members who have settled in for over 10 years.
Loyalty and spirit is a trade mark of any
successful band.

|
THE
TRUMPET SECTION |
|
NEIL MORLEY...
Very recently joined the Band and already
proving a major asset.
His music reading ability and range, which are
the essentials of all fine players is apparent.
Delighted to welcome him to the band. |
|
COLIN STUART...
One of the founder members of the Band and who is a fine example of a musician who can easily move from a 16 piece
band to playing with small mainstream groups, an indication when he toured
with Harry Gold and his Pieces of Eight.
|
|
TREVOR
BARBER... Although
he was in the West End production of the Rat Pack for 5 years Trevor never
missed an engagement with the Len Phillips Big Band. He has played for
every recognised Band in the Country, and is a fine example of a loyal and
talented musician.
|
|
STEVE
DAWSON... The
trade mark of a fine musician is to be able to move to various styles of
music with ease and confidence. He is capable of playing lead, Salsa music
and has backed many top stars both home and abroad.
|
|
ANDY
FLAXMAN Lead Trombone...
A
strong character and an excellent leader of the trombone section, his
playing cannot be faulted. His solo performance on “Emily “ is an
example to all student players. On a trivia point, Andy owns 100 trombones. |
|
PAUL
TAYLOR 2nd Trombone...
A
very talented and deep thinking musician, who is capable of playing modern jazz, salsa music and traditional jazz to a very high
standard and being equally comfortable in a trombone section of a big
band. A writer of poetry that is often set to music and played on Radio
Three. A fine asset to the
Band.
|
|
ANDY FREW
3rd Trombone... Joined
the Band in 2004 and has impressed both musicians and followers with his
easy going manner and ability. Still a young lad, (that is compared to
Len,) his style of playing is quickly being recognised. |
|
BOB
MASLIN Bass Trombone... Has
been with Band for 15 years during which time he has proved his fine
ability on an instrument that has very few solos. He is in great demand
for most West End shows. A
popular and strong family man – it is a pleasure having Bob “on
board.”
|
|
BRIAN
DINSLEY Lead Alto...
Brian
was Lens first choice in 1987 for the sax section. A meticulous leader who demands the highest standards from
his section, and a talented arranger whose scores are regularly featured
within our programmes. A keen
ornithologist .
|
|
PHIL
SNACK 2nd Alto...
The
Band required a Jazz playing alto player, and by good fortune Len was
asked to deputise in a Big Band in Essex - sitting alongside him was
Phil....end of story. Phil
impressed Len and two weeks later was in his sax section. No transfer fee
... a first class addition to the Band. |
|
NICK
BESTON 1st Tenor...
A
graduate from London University studying jazz combines teaching in
Orpington, Kent and playing throughout the Country with Len. Has a fine
attitude and produces a superb sound on tenor. Married with a recently born son
Alfie,
|
|
DAVID
BLACK 1st Tenor... Dave
is a multi-instrumentalist, alto, tenor, baritone, flute and clarinet and
is seen on most gigs when players are unavailable. A graduate from Berklee
College in America for 4 years he is already making a vast impression on the
jazz
and Big Band scene. |
|
|
COLIN
HICKMAN 2nd Tenor...
Colin
has been with the Band for 12 years and is an excellent asset ...as an
arranger, player, and “common sense” adviser, taking a great interest
in all Band affairs. An
accomplished player on all wind instruments. |
|
GERRY
BROADLEY Baritone Sax...
Joined
the Band in 1997 and has that lovely rich baritone sound that is required
for balancing the saxophone section. The seating area in which he plays
represents a plumber’s bag with the baritone, flute, clarinet alto and bass
clarinet. He has lived in London for thirty five years, having moved
from Lancashire- but still sounds like George Formby. A
fine player. |
|
DON
HUNT Piano... Don
is the most experienced musician in the Band having accompanied almost all
the top English and American singers. Bing Crosby, Juliet Prowse, Judy
Garland, Anthony Newley, Matt Monro, Howard Keel and for many years Bruce
Forsyth, the list is endless. Len's right
and left hand man which is
helped by his warm personality and silly sense of humour. |
|
JOE
PETTITT Bass...
Joe
joined the Band on strong recommendation from a fellow bassist after
leaving Trinity College in 2002. A positive character and already
Is
an accepted name in the musical world. Fully occupies his days with
teaching at London area schools. Has a great future. |
|
BILLY
MAGEE Drums...
Every
Band should have a Billy Magee, but they can’t have mine. A
superb drummer that swings, both for a sixteen piece Big Band or trio. A
founder member and devoted to the Band. His one liners during
a dance or concert usually stop the flow of any set piece, but are usually
very funny, The greatest applause from the audience is always for Billy
when featured on “Love for Sale “ |
|
ELEANOR
KEENAN Singer...
In October 2005 Len was introduced to Eleanor and in the
first ten minutes he knew she would be perfect for the Band. Len rarely makes decisions that quickly but before the concert was
finished he realised her style, personality and
voice fitted perfectly. Her renditions of all singing styles are superb
but Len's own particular favourites are the slow ballads. He chose right
and hopes she feels the same.
|
|
ANTON
BROWNE Singer...
Anton has style, plays solo guitar,
teaches and has recorded three tutorial singing CDs yet he still finds time
to commit himself for over fifteen years to the Len Phillips Big Band. Admired
by many of his contemporaries, Anton brings his own interpretation to every
tune in the library. A devotee of rhythm and blues. Always very relaxed
and is a fine story teller. |
|
ANN
PHILLIPS Lens devoted wife...
Probably
the most important member of the Band, with her ability to the making of
Tuna sandwiches and the numerous orange drinks for long journeys. Has won awards for the highest CD saleswoman of the year since
1987. Most popular at the end of each gig when she hands out the
Band members cheques. |
|
DAVID
FROST
Assistant to Len... The
unseen and “never mentioned in
dispatches”...David who is
never to be far away from Len. The man who checks all the music before and
after the event. Gives advice to Len (which he totally ignores,) suggests
routes to a gig (which always produces an argument,) but who would be
impossible to replace.
